Evans Chess

At a leisurely hour after a serious game of chess at the YMCA Nagercoil located at the heart of the city, a place where both young and young in spirit start off new ideas, a few chess enthusiasts dreams of a chess club to whoosh their enthusiasm to the young in the town and thus were born the Evans Chess club.

Those days two or three tournaments were held occasionally by the district Chess association in the District. There were no clubs. Mr. S Kenny Sterling Henry, Mr Ben Arumai Raj, Mr Oral Issac, Mr John Godwin, and Mr JD Rajasehar being great enthusiasts of the game plan, when joined by  Nb Sub J Jeevan Kumar (Retd) on retirement from the Army, the dream took shape and the society, Evans Chess Club was born on 10 Nov 2010 and was registered on 04 Feb 2011 (Reg No 13/2011).

Now the Club chiefly concentrates in creating awareness among school children in and around Nagercoil and strides

gloriously forward without any compromise on standards. As in the Logo, the motto of Evans Chess Club is Pursuit of Excellence.

Ever since the formation of Evans Chess Club, YMCA, Nagercoil has been providing space for chess coaching in their venue and the club has organised various open state level chess tournaments, from First YMCA Rapid Chess Tournament to Twentieth YMCA Rapid Chess Tournament till the end of year 2019.The Club Conducted ASISC Tamilnadu Regional Tournament Around 200 participants from Kanyakumari dist and nearby southern districts participated. During the Corona Lockdown period, regular on line chess competitions without registration fee were held. The Evans Chess Club is also imparting chess coaching to various schools in and around Kanyakumari District. The club does not restrict any player to participate in its chess tournaments (irrespective of clubs/associations they belong to). The club does not support or entertain prejudices against other clubs; in fact, it supports formation of more clubs and chess activities with the promotion of the game alone as its aspiration. We acknowledge the indebtedness we owe to Mr Karun Dugal, Mr Gurpreeth Singh, all our office bearers, Mr Kannan, and Mr K. Esakki who have hitherto been greatly sustaining us with their resources in quality and quantity.  We also owe our thanks to Comorin International School, Aralvaimozhi, Evans Group of Institutions for their support in our tournaments.
